October 2017: Prof. Heidi Byrnes joins advisory board

In October 2017, we were deeply honored and delighted to welcome Prof. Heidi Byrnes to the advisory board of MUSE International. Prof. Heidi Byrnes has been on the faculty at Georgetown University for over 35 years.  She also serves as the editor-in-chief of the Modern Language Journal, one of the most distinguished journals in the field.

“An internationally known expert in adult instructed second language learning and teaching, Prof. Byrnes was instrumental in the creation of our four-year integrated undergraduate curriculum in German [at Georgetown University] that has gained national and international recognition since its development from 1997 to 2000.

Over the past few years, Prof. Byrnes received a number of prestigious awards including the Distinguished Scholarship and Service Award, American Association for Applied Linguistics, 2013; the Nelson H. Brooks Award for Outstanding Leadership in the Profession, The Northeast Conference on the Teaching of Foreign Languages, 2013; and the Wilga Rivers award for leadership in higher education, the American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages (ACTFL), 2012.”  (Adapted from https://german.georgetown.edu/story/1242751814140.html)

September 2017: Dr. Brian Tomlinson joins MUSE

We are deeply honored to announce that Dr. Brian Tomlinson has accepted our invitation to join MUSE as an advisory board member. Advisory board members are distinguished leaders and scholars in the field who counsel the body of regular members, provide aspects of mentorship to the organization, and may give guest talks at meetings. Dr. Tomlinson’s enormous contributions to the field of materials writing include numerous publications in areas of expertise such as:

  • Materials and Curriculum Development and Evaluation
  • Programme Evaluation
  • Roles of Inner Speech and Visual Imaging in the Learning and Use of Languages
  • Language Teaching Methodology
  • Teaching Language Through Literature
  • Language Evaluation and Assessment
  • Reading Research and Teaching of Reading
  • Teacher Development
  • Language Acquisition and Development

In addition, Dr. Tomlinson is the founding member of The Materials Development Association (MATSDA), an organization that brings together teachers, researchers, writers and publishers from all over the world to help inform the field of materials development for language learning. Currently, Dr. Tomlinson is an Honorary Visiting Professor at the University of Liverpool, a TESOL Professor at Anaheim University and a Chair Professor at Shanghai International Studies University.

September 2017 meeting

On Saturday, September 2, 2017, MUSE held a two hour long meeting attended by Adon Berwick, Marcus Grandon, Anne Marie Guerrettaz, Siwon Lee, and Corrine Mathieu.  At the end of the meeting, Anne Marie met with Mostafa Pourhaji as well to provide an overview and discuss the topics discussed at the larger group meeting.  Resources that the group is providing to the broader research community such as the list of key references on language classroom materials use as well as group business were the topics of the meeting.
